Camping Comfort

What makes the best camping chair

There is no single best camping chair, because the best one depends on how you camp and who sits in it. What follows is a way to decide for yourself, in the order the decisions matter.

Updated 1 November 2026. General guidance; this site sells nothing and publishes no reviews.

Start with how you will use it

Write down where the chair will spend its time. A chair that lives in a caravan and comes out at every stop can be bulky and padded. A chair that travels in a backpack cannot. A chair that goes to the beach will meet sand and salt. Choosing the use first removes most of the options.

If you camp in several ways, buy for the one you do most and accept a compromise on the others, or own two chairs.

Then the body in it

Comfort is personal. Think about height, hips, shoulders and any back, hip or knee trouble. Taller people usually want a higher back and a deeper seat. People who find it hard to stand up from low seats should look for a higher seat height and sturdy armrests. Anyone near the top of the weight rating should look at the heavy duty options instead.

Then pack size and weight

Check the packed size and the weight, not only the seated dimensions. A chair is only comfortable if you actually bring it. The lightweight chair guide explains the trade-offs when weight is the limit.

Frame, fabric and the details that fail

Steel frames are strong and heavier, aluminium frames are lighter. Check the joints, the rivets and the stitching at the seat and arm edges. A good chair feels solid when you shake it in the shop or on arrival. Treat anything that wobbles at home as a bigger problem outdoors on uneven ground.

Features worth paying for, and ones that are not

A cup holder, a side pocket and a carry bag are small things you will use every trip. A side table is useful if you camp by a van or fire. A recliner is worth it if you sit for long stretches. Lights, speakers and heating pads are extras that add weight and parts that can break.

How to check a claim

Be careful with rankings and star ratings on any shopping or review page, including affiliate pages, which are paid when you buy. Read the measurements and the weight rating, then look for reviews that mention the same use as yours. This site does not sell chairs and does not rate products; it explains what to look for.
