Heavy duty camping chairs

A heavy duty camping chair has a stronger frame, a wider seat and a higher weight rating than a standard chair. If you are close to the limit of a normal chair, or want a margin of safety, this is the kind to look for.

Reading the weight rating

The weight rating, also called the maximum load, is the weight the maker says the chair is designed to carry. Standard camping chairs are commonly rated around 100 to 120 kg, and chairs sold as heavy duty are often rated higher; the exact number is on the label or in the listing. Treat it as a ceiling, not a target, and leave a margin because sitting down drops more load on the chair than sitting still does.

What makes a chair stronger

Thicker steel tubing, reinforced joints, a wider base and stronger fabric stitching. A wider seat is also more comfortable for larger people because the edges of a narrow seat press into the legs. Check the seat width as well as the rating.

Weight and pack size

Heavy duty chairs are heavier and bulkier. That is the price of strength, and it is worth paying if the alternative is a chair that is at its limit. Check the packed size and the weight before you buy.

Signs a chair is struggling

Creaking, a seat that sags more than when new, a frame that leans to one side, stitching that pulls at the edges. Stop using the chair if you see any of these. A failure on rough ground can cause a fall.

Recliners and stools

Some recliners are rated for higher loads, and some stools are not, so check the label of every item rather than assuming.
